Over to Dr. Shiney Linu…
What do you consider the main achievements in your life?
I feel that being a doctor is the greatest achievement of my life. I had always I wanted to be in a profession through which I could help the mankind. The sense of satisfaction or happiness when I get when a patient thanks me for treating them is a huge compliment. The happiness in their smiles and the thankfulness that I can see in their eyes, when their pain or illness is cured is the moment is the proudest greatest achievement of my life.
What qualities do women need to imbibe within themselves to be more empowered and successful in life?
I think every woman is unique and every woman has her own strengths and weakness, she need to find out her strength and work on it to be successful.
Empowerment, according to me is by getting good education, and a suitable employment. One needs to be confident enough to take decisions of her life and claim their rights. Women are equally competent and intelligent. But you need to use in the right way by balancing the life between work life and family.
How should a WOW Woman achieve that?
Get educated and learn new things in life. Try to increase your knowledge.
Challenge yourself to make new choices. Know that you are worthy of having all your desires.
An empowered woman is courageous, but not necessarily fearless. Overcome your fears. Don’t keep any limits for yourself. Expand your limits.
Everybody may have imperfections, but realise that it is a part of being human. Make every mistake a personal learning experience.
What drives you to be at the top of your game? What are your success strategies?
The love and passion to do the best in my profession keeps me motivated at all times.
I attribute my success to continuous learning, belief in self and maintaining ethics of my profession by having compassion, empathy, honesty, commitment & respect. A strong work ethic means you dedicate 100% of yourself to your work or patient every day, regardless of how tired you are or what is going on in your personal life.
Have you dealt with failure? If so, how did you overcome it and resurge when all chips were down?
I cannot say it as failure. But yes of course I have felt the pain of not getting satisfaction in whatever I was doing. Like every working woman, I struggled to maintain balance between work and home. I tried to deviate from my profession and do a different job to find time for my family. But every minute, my inner self used to tell me that you are not made for this.
Finally I realised that whatever I was doing was not my passion. I left everything and took my path to success. I decided to face whatever comes my way. It was not easy. I faced criticism too. It was very easy for me to find excuses and sit back at home. But I didn’t stop. I struggled even more to make my future path easy.
I knew that it was just temporary and I will win over it. I learnt from my past experiences. Probably I would not have been whatever I am today, had I not taken that step. It can be considered as my stepping stone to success.
It is important for us to recognize the power of men in supporting women. Is there a man who played an instrumental role in your personal growth and success? Who are they and how did they influence you?
“There is a man behind every successful woman” is true in my case. And that one and only one man is my Husband.
He has supported and guided me in each step of my personal growth and success. He has always been a pillar of strength to me.
I have studied a lot after my marriage too. That was only because of his strong support. Even if I ask him today that what else I can do further, he will have a whole list for me.
My only sincere request to all men is please support the women in your life in their personal growth. Do not hold her back and restrict her talents only to the kitchen.
Which 3 Indian women have inspired you in your life and why?
Mary Kom – Mary Kom is a woman of substance who proved that everything is possible if you set your heart, body, mind and soul into your dream.
She studied only till VIII. Success was not easy for Mary Kom as she had domestic responsibilities.
She had twin children, it was then everyone thought that her career was finished and Kom would never return to the sport. But She proved it wrong, worked almost round the clock to make sure she was taking care of her family and at the same time trained hard in boxing and made a classic come back to tell her critics that she still had what it takes to be a winner.
Kiran Bedi – I admire her for the strong decisions she take and for fighting injustice. Kiran Bedi started her career as a lecturer then joined the prestigious Indian Police Service, simply for her urge to become outstanding than the rest. Her acts of courage really inspire me. The way she transformed Tihar jail into a peace loving ashram.
Her speeches continue to inspire women to raise their voice against injustice and work hard for a good life.
Mother Theresa – She was a lady of great tenure who spent her whole life in helping needy and poor people. Her care, love and sympathy to mankind inspire me. She was always unique, who stood out of the crowd. She has inspired lot of people to do impossible works in life.
