According to researchers at Uppsala University in Sweden, even a single night of sleep loss can impact metabolism in humans. The study, published in the journal Science Advances, may help explain how over time, shift work and chronic sleep loss impairs metabolism and adversely affects the body composition.

Earlier research has also shown that chronic sleep loss or shift work can raise the risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Other studies have shown a link between disrupted sleep and adverse weight gain, in which fat accumulation is increased while muscle mass is decreased, a combination associated with some poor health consequences.
